What are free radicals? They are atoms with single or unpaired electrons in their orbits. On CNN World Report, the benefits of Enzogenol were discussed. The report talked about the benefits the users were yielding. One patient, suffering from arthritis went from “bed-ridden pain” to “jumping out of her skin with energy”.

The clinical studies that were conducted on mice were also discussed. In that study, mice showed an increase in health, longevity, and a significant decrease in tumors: results that the Enzogenol researchers feel could be duplicated in humans.

Diversity And Potency

Quercetin, one of the more abundant components, is sometimes prescribed as a natural remedy for the treatment of cardio-vascular problems, such as poor blood circulation. Enzogenol contains more of the higher molecular weight oligomeric proanthocyanidins than any other antioxidant supplement. Oligomeric proanthocyanidins are believed to be one of the key groups responsible for enabling the body to fight free radicals.

In a comparative study conducted of anti-oxidant activity of Enzogenol vs four other leading antioxidant compounds suggests the following. The Peroxyl Radical Scavenging Assay was used.

Even though the Assay conducted favorable results for Enzogenol, researchers felt that there were other factors at work. The answer emerged when they reviewed the extraction technique. The pure water process meant that important natural sugars and organic acids were being included in Enzogenol, just as they are in the tree’s natural defense system.

The water extraction may be, for the first time ever, harvesting both water and lipid-soluble flavanoids simultaneously.

The natural balance of all those compounds, which work together to form part of the tree’s defense system, is not found in products extracted with chemical solvents.

NOT ALL ANTIOXIDANTS ARE THE SAME

Green and black tea extracts contain mainly monomeric proanthocyanidins, or catechins, and little of the proanthocyanidins such as the important oligomeric groupings, considered essential to a balanced antioxidant. They also contain few of the flavanoid glycosides or esters. While grape seed extracts do contain many of the dimers, trimers and other lower weight proanthocyanidins, they are unfortunately quite variable due to a wide range of raw material sources and extraction methods. Almost all grape seed extracts are produced using powerful solvents, so they suffer from the same shortcomings as other botanicals which are produced with this technology. Grape seed is often incorporated into supplements where low cost, rather than quality or efficacy is the primary consideration.

Research Results and Data

One of the most important abilities of an antioxidant is to stop free radical damage that occurs through lipids.  The Peroxyl Radical Scavenging Assay measures the ability of compounds to stop lipid oxidation chain reactions.  Each compound was assessed at the concentration of 1mg/ml.  The scale is depicted so that 100% inhibition would have completely stopped the chain reaction.  Notice Enzogenol's superiority in this category.

Why include vitamin C and E?

Vitamin E is an antioxidant which dissolves in our body's fats and oils. Any free radicals formed in the fat will react with Vitamin E to form a Vitamin E radical. This Vitamin E radical lacks the energy to cause any further damage but will react with Vitamin C in the blood, thus regenerating itself.

The breakdown product of Vitamin C is removed by the kidneys. In this way the free radicals formed in fats are removed from the body by transfer to Vitamin E, then to Vitamin C an our through the kidneys as urine. Vitamin C also reacts with any water-soluble free radicals in the blood.

Understanding the Effects of Free Radicals

For at least the first 20 or so years of our lives our bodies appear well protected from free radical damage. The levels of both antioxidant molecules and antioxidant enzymes are high enough to absorb most of the free radical fluxes occurring in the body during this time. As we get older the effectiveness of these protective systems slowly decreases. It seems not all the free radicals produced are neutralized and so there is a slow build-up of damaged molecules.

The damage includes the antioxidant defense systems and so as we age there is a slow decrease in the amount of active superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase operating in our bodies. Just as friction wears out a machine, free radicals wear out the body.
